God's Calling

God’s Chosen Heroes

God has given each of you a gift from His great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 1 Peter 4:10

 God chose ordinary people
 To get His objectives done;
He didn’t pick a perfect person,
 Just a willing one.

 We are God’s chosen heroes
When we go that extra mile,
To help a friend reach a goal
 Or overcome a trial.

Encouraging others to be their best
While we’re walking in His will,
 Produces unity among each other
As we sharpen each others’ skill.

We talk a lot about heroes these days. Health care workers on the front lines, police officers and fire fighters putting their lives on the line everyday, scientists developing vaccines, military personnel protecting our country, teachers finding ways to educate kids virtually, just to name a few. We consider them heroes because their professions provide services that are vital to our well-being.

While that is a good definition of a hero, I’d like to go another step further and say anyone making this world a better place is a hero. When you look at the heroes of the Bible, they were very ordinary people with unique gifts that God used for good. Moses, a shepherd, led his people to freedom. David, as a young boy, slayed a giant. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego showed great bravery in the face of persecution for their faith. Esther, a young teenager, saved her nation. Joseph, a carpenter, was chosen to be Jesus’ earthly father. Peter, a fisherman, became the founder of the church. The one thing they all had in common was that they were willing to answer God’s calling.

Are you a hero?

  • If you’ve encouraged someone today, then you’re a hero.
  • If you’ve prayed with or for someone today, then you’re a hero.
  • If you’ve provided for the needy today, then you’re a hero.
  • If you’ve used your talents and gifts to honor God, then you’re a hero.

Not all heroes wear a uniform. Most of them are hiding in plain sight simply showing love to their fellow man. We may not receive a Nobel prize or get our name in the paper, but that’s not why we we serve others. It’s simply a natural extension of our love of God. When we bless others, we bless God. (Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16) Thank your for your service! Carry on, my friends!

Lord, thank You for every day heroes who bless others in many different ways. Show me ways I can serve others and be a blessing to those around me. Amen
