Attributes of God
I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and on Your wondrous works. Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, and I will declare Your greatness. They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness and shall sing of Your righteousness. Psalm 145:5-7

It’s a new year, a blank slate ready to be filled in with activities, appointments, events, trips, etc. As I filled out my 2022 calendar with already scheduled dates, I thought about the year ahead. There’s a sense of anticipation looking at a blank calendar. What adventures are in store for this year? What new thing will I learn this year? In what ways will I grow spiritually?
As I contemplated that last question, I thought about ways I could meditate on God. (I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and on Your wondrous works. Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, and I will declare Your greatness. They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness, and shall sing of Your righteousness. Psalm 145:5-7) He has so many wondrous attributes, so I’ve decided this year to focus on one attribute a week. That will get me through the list I wrote twice. I’m excited to see where the Lord takes me on this journey as I pour over scriptures pertaining to each attribute. (Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance. Proverbs 1:5)
As I looked over the list, I realized there are several categories that describe God. Some attributes describe His Being such as beautiful, eternal, and Yahweh. Others describe His actions such as compassionate, generous, loving, and merciful. Another category could be how He relates to us such as High Priest, Redeemer, and Teacher. Of course, this list is just a smattering of the myriad ways to describe God. (Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom. Psalm 145:3)
So many emotions are evoked as I ponder these attributes. Feelings of awe, respect, gratefulness, and joy to name a few. It makes me feel insignificant and significant at the same time! He’s mighty yet merciful, omnipotent yet compassionate, just yet redemptive. He knows me-the good, the bad, the ugly-yet loves me unconditionally. Although He is omnipotent, He made us in His own image. This dichotomy of attributes is hard to grasp, but it’s what makes God so approachable. Because He is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, there is a sense of reverent fear of Him. Yet, we can have a personal relationship with Him, because He is also our Defender, Redeemer, and Friend. He wants to have a relationship with us! (You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13)
So what would your list of God’s attributes look like? Perhaps similar to mine or completely different. That’s the beauty of God! He speaks to each of us individually to meet our needs. May this year be filled with new revelations of God as your relationship with Him grows. (For all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16, 17)
Lord, I praise You for all that You are! I marvel at the ways You relate to us! As I continue to delve deeper in my understanding of You, may my relationship with You grow ever stronger. Amen
