Words of Wisdom

Enjoy Christ to the Fullest

This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

Enjoy Him to the fullest,
Let go of what has been;
Enjoy Him to the fullest,
Don’t pick up the past again.

Enjoy Him to the fullest,
Let go of what may come;
Enjoy Him to the fullest,
Experience His freedom.

Enjoy Him to the fullest,
He will show you how;
Enjoy Him to the fullest,
Live in the here and now!

In order to enjoy Christ to the fullest, we must live in the moment. If we dwell in the past, our focus is either on what used to be or the mistakes we’ve made. Nostalgia has a way of making things of the past look so much better than it really was, because we tend to remember the good things. But the danger is that we miss out on what is good in the here and now, because we’re missing how it used to be. We can also dwell on past mistakes that keep us stuck there. We need to let go of whatever misdeeds we’ve done in the past. Not only do we accept God’s forgiveness, but we forgive ourselves so we can move forward.

We can also be too focused on tomorrow. Sometimes we’re so focused on what’s ahead, that we miss the blessings of today. We may be consumed by our plans for the future or fears of the unknown. As a teacher I had to work ahead. I would have plans for the whole year made ahead in September. Of course, things would come up and changes had to be made, but there was comfort in knowing I had a plan. But, if I got too consumed with what I was going to do the next month or even the next day, I could miss an opportunity or blessing right in front of me! Then I heard the phrase “Plan like you’re going to live forever, but live like you’re going to die tomorrow.” Planning is important and has it’s place. But, the danger is that we can plan our whole life away and never truly enjoy the moment we’re in! I remember the day I got married, my sister told me to soak in every moment of this day because it was going to all happen so fast. It was such good advice!

So, we must intentionally live for the day, because it’s the only assurance we have! This is the day the Lord has made for us! Find joy in the big and small things the day brings. It may be a glorious sunrise, a kind word spoken to you, or a cool evening breeze. It may even be an opportunity to witness to someone. Just keep your heart open to what God has for you today and enjoy it!

Lord, thank You for today.
Help us to live in the present
and be open to what You have for us
right here, right now.
Amen
